Exercise 41, § 6

Algebra, I, 159

Let x,yx, y be two elements of a group GG.

(a) For there to exist a,ba, b in GG such that bay=xabbay = xab, it is necessary and sufficient that xy−1xy^{-1} be a commutator.

(b) For there to exist 2n+12n + 1 elements a1,a2,…,a2n+1a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_{2n+1} in GG such that

x=a1a2…a2n+1andy=a2n+1a2n…a1, x = a_1 a_2 \ldots a_{2n+1} \quad \text{and} \quad y = a_{2n+1} a_{2n} \ldots a_1,
it is necessary and sufficient that xy−1xy^{-1} be a product of nn commutators (argue by induction on nn).
