Exercise 10, § 9

Algebra, I, 176

Let AA be a commutative ring and U\mathscr{U} the intersection of its maximal ideals.

(a) Show that the canonical homomorphism A∗→(A/U)∗A^* \to (A/\mathscr{U})^* is surjective and that its kernel is 1+U1 + \mathscr{U}.

(b) Suppose that the set MM of maximal ideals of AA is finite and that A∗A^* is finite. Deduce that AA is finite (apply Proposition 8 of § 8, no. 10 to A/UA/\mathscr{U}).

(c) Deduce that the set of prime numbers is infinite (note that Z∗={1,−1}\mathbf{Z}^* = \{1, -1\}).

(d) Suppose that A∗A^* is finite and that A/mA/m is finite for every maximal ideal mm. Can it be deduced that AA is finite, that AA is countable?
