Exercise 11, § 9

Algebra, I, 176

Let PP be the set of prime numbers and AA the product ring of the fields Z/pZ\mathbf{Z}/p\mathbf{Z}, p∈Pp \in P. Let aa be the subset of AA consisting of the elements (ap)p∈P(a_p)_{p \in P} such that ap≠0a_p \neq 0 only for a finite number of indices pp.

(a) aa is an ideal of AA.

(b) Let B=A/aB = A/a. For every integer n>0n > 0 and every b≠0b \neq 0 in BB, there exists one and only one element b′b' of BB such that nb′=bnb' = b (note that if p∈Pp \in P does not divide nn, multiplication by nn in Z/pZ\mathbf{Z}/p\mathbf{Z} is bijective). Deduce that B contains a subfield isomorphic to Q\mathbf{Q}.
