Algebra, I, 178

Let (Ki)i∈I(\mathbf{K}_i)_{i \in I} be a family of fields. For every subset JJ of II, let eJe_J denote the element of the product K=∏i∈IKiK = \prod_{i \in I} \mathbf{K}_i whose ii-th component is equal to 0 if i∈Ji \in J and to 1 if i∈I−Ji \in I - J.

(a) Let x=(xi)x = (x_i) be an element of KK and J(x)J(x) the set of elements i∈Ii \in I such that xi=0x_i = 0. Show that there exists an invertible element uu in KK such that x=ueJ(x)=eJ(x)ux = ue_{J(x)} = e_{J(x)}u.

(b) Let aa be a left (resp. right) ideal of KK distinct from KK. Let Fa\mathscr{F}_a be the set of subsets JJ of II such that eJ∈ae_J \in a. Show that Fa\mathscr{F}_a has the following properties: (b1)(b_1) If J∈FaJ \in \mathscr{F}_a and J′⊃JJ' \supset J, then J′∈FaJ' \in \mathscr{F}_a. (b2)(b_2) If J1,J2∈FaJ_1, J_2 \in \mathscr{F}_a, then J1∩J2∈FaJ_1 \cap J_2 \in \mathscr{F}_a. (b3)(b_3) ∅∉Fa\varnothing \notin \mathscr{F}_a. Show that x∈ax \in a is equivalent to J(x)∈FaJ(x) \in \mathscr{F}_a (use (a)). Deduce that aa is a two-sided ideal.

(c) A set of subsets of II is called a filter if it satisfies properties (b1),(b2),(b3)(b_1), (b_2), (b_3) above (cf. General Topology, I, § 6). Show that the mapping a↦Faa \mapsto \mathscr{F}_a is a strictly increasing bijection of the set of ideals of KK distinct from KK onto the set of filters of II. Show that aa is maximal if and only if Fa\mathscr{F}_a is an ultrafilter.

(d) Let F\mathscr{F} be a non-trivial ultrafilter on the set PP of prime numbers, let aa be the corresponding ideal of the ring K=∏p∈PZ/pZK = \prod_{p \in P} \mathbf{Z}/p\mathbf{Z} and let k=K/ak = K/a. Show that kk is a field of characteristic 0.
