Bourbaki

Exercise 18, § 9

Algebra, I, 178

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

(a) Let KK be a field and a,ba, b two non-permutable elements of KK. Show that (1) a=(b−(a−1)−1b(a−1))(a−1ba−(a−1)−1b(a−1))−1a = (b - (a - 1)^{-1}b(a - 1))(a^{-1}ba - (a - 1)^{-1}b(a - 1))^{-1} (2) a=(1−(a−1)−1b−1(a−1)b)(a−1b−1ab−(a−1)−1b−1(a−1)b)−1a = (1 - (a - 1)^{-1}b^{-1}(a - 1)b)(a^{-1}b^{-1}ab - (a - 1)^{-1}b^{-1}(a - 1)b)^{-1}.

(b) Let KK be a non-commutative field and xx an element not belonging to the centre of KK. Show that KK is generated by the set of conjugates axa−1axa^{-1} of xx. (Let K1K_1 be the subfield of KK generated by the set of conjugates of xx. Deduce from (a) that, if K1≠KK_1 \neq K and a∈K1a \in K_1 and b∉K1b \notin K_1, then necessarily ab=baab = ba. Deduce a contradiction by considering in K1K_1 two non-permutable elements a,a′a, a' and an element b∉K1b \notin K_1 and noting that ba∉K1ba \notin K_1.)

(c) Deduce from (b) that if ZZ is the centre of KK and HH is a subfield of KK such that Z⊂H⊂KZ \subset H \subset K and aHa−1=HaHa^{-1} = H for all a≠0a \neq 0 in KK, then H=ZH = Z or H=KH = K (Cartan-Brauer-Hua Theorem).

(d) Deduce from (a) that in a non-commutative field KK, the set of commutators aba−1b−1aba^{-1}b^{-1} of elements ≠0\neq 0 in KK generates the field KK.
