Exercise 19, § 9

Algebra, I, 178

Let AA be a non-zero pseudo-ring such that, for all a≠0a \neq 0 in AA and all b∈Ab \in A, the equation ax+ya=bax + ya = b has solutions consisting of ordered pairs (x,y)(x, y) of elements of AA; in other words, aA+Aa=AaA + Aa = A for a≠0a \neq 0 in AA.

(a) Show that AA is the only non-zero two-sided ideal in AA.

(b) Show that the relation a≠0a \neq 0 implies a2≠0a^2 \neq 0 (note that if a2=0a^2 = 0, it would follow that aAa={0}aAa = \{0\}).

(c) Show that if ab=0ab = 0 and a≠0a \neq 0 (resp. b≠0b \neq 0) then b=0b = 0 (resp. a=0a = 0). (Note that (ba)2=0(ba)^2 = 0 and deduce that bAb={0}bAb = \{0\}.)
