Let E be a vector space.
(a) Show that if M and N are two vector subspaces of E and the orthogonals of and respectively in , the orthogonal of is (cf. § 2, Exercise 9 (a)).
(b) If is infinite-dimensional, show that there exist hyperplanes of such that the subspace of orthogonal to reduces to 0 (consider a hyperplane containing the coordinate forms corresponding to a basis of ).
(c) Show that if is infinite-dimensional there exists an infinite family of subspaces of such that, if is the subspace of orthogonal to , the subspace of orthogonal to is distinct from .
(d) Deduce from (b) that if is infinite-dimensional, there exists a decomposition of as a direct sum, being finite-dimensional, for which the sum of subspaces of orthogonal respectively to and is distinct from .
(e) For a subspace of to be finite-dimensional, it is necessary and sufficient that its orthogonal in be of finite codimension.
