Exercise 24, § 7

Algebra, II, 405

Let EE be a vector space of finite dimension n>1n > 1 over a commutative field KK; show that, unless n=2n = 2 and KK is a field with two elements, there exists no isomorphism ϕ\phi of EE onto E∗E^* depending only on the vector space structure of EE. (Note that if ϕ\phi is such an isomorphism, then necessarily ⟨x,ϕ(y)⟩=⟨u(x),ϕ(u(y))⟩\langle x, \phi(y) \rangle = \langle u(x), \phi(u(y)) \rangle for x,yx, y in EE and for every automorphism uu of EE (Set Theory, IV, § 1, no. 5).)
