Exercise 33, § 7

Algebra, II, 407

Let AA be an integral domain. An AA-module EE is called divisible if for all x∈Ex \in E and all α≠0\alpha \neq 0 in AA, there exists y∈Ey \in E such that αy=x\alpha y = x.

(a) Let E,FE, F be two AA-modules. Show that if EE is divisible, so is E⊗AFE \otimes_A F. If EE is divisible and FF is torsion-free, Hom⁡A(E,F)\operatorname{Hom}_A(E, F) is torsion-free. If EE is a torsion AA-module and FF is divisible, then E⊗AF={0}E \otimes_A F = \{0\}. If EE is a torsion AA-module and FF is torsion-free, then Hom⁡A(E,F)={0}\operatorname{Hom}_A(E, F) = \{0\}.

(b) Show that every injective AA-module (§2§ 2, Exercise 11) is divisible and conversely that every divisible torsion-free AA-module is injective (use criterion (δ\delta) of §2§ 2, Exercise 11).
