Algebra, II, 401

Let (Hλ)λ∈L(H_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} be a family of hyperplanes (passing through 0) of a vector space EE over a field KK, which is a covering of EE.

(a) Show that, if KK is finite, then Card⁡(L)⩾1+Card⁡(K)\operatorname{Card}(L) \geqslant 1 + \operatorname{Card}(K) and, if KK is infinite, Card⁡(L)⩾ℵ0=Card⁡(N)\operatorname{Card}(L) \geqslant \aleph_0 = \operatorname{Card}(\mathbf{N}). (Prove by induction on rr that if KK has at least rr elements, then EE cannot be the union of rr hyperplanes.) Show by examples that these inequalities cannot be improved without an additional hypothesis (when KK is infinite, consider the space E=Ks(N)E = K_s^{(N)}).

(b) If EE is finite-dimensional, show that Card⁡(L)⩾1+Card⁡(K)\operatorname{Card}(L) \geqslant 1 + \operatorname{Card}(K). (Argue by induction on dim⁡(E)\dim(E).)
