Exercise 14, § 9

Algebra, II, 415

In a projective plane P(V)\mathbf{P}(V) over a field K with at least three elements, let D, D′D' be two distinct lines. In order that, for any distinct points a,b,ca, b, c of D, a′,b′,c′a', b', c' of D′D', the intersection points rr of Dab′D_{ab'} and Dba′D_{ba'}, qq of Dac′D_{ac'} and Dca′D_{ca'}, pp of Dbc′D_{bc'} and Dcb′D_{cb'}, lie on a straight line, it is necessary and sufficient that K be commutative ("Pappus's theorem"; reduce it to the case where qq and rr are on the line at infinity of an affine plane). Apply this theorem to the projective space of lines of P(V)\mathbf{P}(V) (Exercise 12).
