Exercise 16, § 9

Algebra, II, 415

(a) Let E=P(V)E = \mathbf{P}(V) and E′=P(V′)E' = \mathbf{P}(V') be two projective spaces of the same dimension n≥2n \geq 2 over two fields K, K′K' respectively and let uu be a bijective mapping of E onto E′E', mapping any three points on a straight line to three points on a straight line. Show that there exist an isomorphism σ\sigma of K onto K′K' and a bijective semi-linear mapping vv of V onto V′V' (relative to σ\sigma) such that uu is the mapping obtained from vv when passing to the quotients ("fundamental theorem of projective geometry"; use Exercise 7). Suppose also that V′=VV' = V and K is commutative; for uu to be a projective mapping, it is necessary and sufficient that also

[u(a)u(b)u(d)u(c)]=[abdc] \begin{bmatrix} u(a) & u(b) \\ u(d) & u(c) \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} a & b \\ d & c \end{bmatrix}
for every quadruple (a,b,c,d)(a, b, c, d) of distinct points on a straight line in P(V)\mathbf{P}(V).

(b) Let pp be an integer such that 1≤p≤n−11 \leq p \leq n - 1. Show that the first conclusion of (a) holds when the image under uu of every pp-dimensional projective linear variety is contained in a pp-dimensional projective linear variety.
