Exercise 18, § 2

Algebra, III, 623

Let K be a commutative field and K[X] the ring of polynomials in one indeterminate over K. Show that every automorphism s of the ring K[X] leaves K invariant (Exercise 14(c)) and induces on K an automorphism of this field; show further that necessarily s(X) = aX + b, with a ≠ 0 in K and b∈Kb \in K (cf. Exercise 17). Conversely, show that being given an automorphism σ\sigma of KK and two elements a,ba, b of KK such that a≠0a \neq 0 defines one and only one automorphism ss of K[X]K[X] such that s∣K=σs|K = \sigma and s(X)=aX+bs(X) = aX + b. If GG is the group of all automorphisms of the ring K[X]K[X] and NN the subgroup of GG consisting of the KK-algebra structure of K[X]K[X], show that NN is a normal subgroup of GG and that G/NG/N is isomorphic to the automorphism group of the field KK; the group NN is isomorphic to the group defined on the set K∗×KK^* \times K by the law of composition (λ,μ)(λ′,μ′)=(λλ′,λ′μ+μ′)(\lambda, \mu)(\lambda', \mu') = (\lambda \lambda', \lambda' \mu + \mu').
