Exercise 20, § 2

Algebra, III, 624

Show that there exists no polynomial identity in 6 indeterminates

(X12+X22+X32)(Y22+Y22+Y32)=P2+Q2+R2 (X_1^2 + X_2^2 + X_3^2)(Y_2^2 + Y_2^2 + Y_3^2) = P^2 + Q^2 + R^2

where P,Q,RP, Q, R are three polynomials with coefficients in Z\mathbf{Z} with respect to the indeterminates XiX_i and YiY_i. (Observe that 15=3.515 = 3.5 cannot be written in the form p2+q2+r2p^2 + q^2 + r^2, where p,q,rp, q, r are integers.)
