Algebra, III, 624

Let SS be a multiplicative monoid with identity element ee, satisfying condition (D) of no. 10 and further satisfying the two following conditions: (1) the relation st=est = e implies s=t=es = t = e: (2) for all s∈Ss \in S, the number nn of terms in a finite sequence (ti)1≤i≤n(t_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n} of elements distinct from ee and such that t1t2…tn=st_1 t_2 \ldots t_n = s is less than a finite number ν(s)\nu(s) depending only on ss.

Show that, for an element x=∑s∈Sαssx = \sum_{s \in S} \alpha_s s of the total algebra of SS over a ring AA to be invertible, it is necessary and sufficient that αe\alpha_e be invertible in AA (reduce it to the case where αe=1\alpha_e = 1 and use the identity

e−zn+1=(e−z)(e+z+⋯+zn)). e - z^{n+1} = (e - z)(e + z + \cdots + z^n)).
