Exercise 7, § 2

Algebra, III, 620

Let KK be a commutative field in which 2≠02 \neq 0 and EE the algebra over KK with a basis of four elements 1,i,j,k1, i, j, k (1 the unit element) with multiplication table

i2=j2=k2=1,ij=ji=k,jk=kj=i,ki=ik=j. i^2 = j^2 = k^2 = 1, \quad ij = ji = k, \quad jk = kj = i, \quad ki = ik = j.

Show that EE is isomorphic to the product of four fields isomorphic to KK (consider the basis of EE consisting of the elements (1+εi)(1+ε′j)(1 + \varepsilon i)(1 + \varepsilon' j), where ε\varepsilon and ε′\varepsilon' are equal to 1 or −1-1).

The algebra EE is the algebra (over KK) of the product of two cyclic groups of order 2. Generalize this to the algebra of the product group of nn cyclic groups of order 2 (cf. § 4, no. 1, Example 2).
