Let KK be a field, BB the polynomial ring K[X1,X2]K[X_1, X_2] and pp the ideal of BB generated by the polynomial X13−X22X_1^3 - X_2^2.

(a) Show that pp is prime and therefore A=B/pA = B/p is an integral domain. Let aa and bb denote the canonical images of X1X_1 and X2X_2 in AA; aa and bb are not invertible in AA and a3=b2a^3 = b^2.

(b) Let mm be the (maximal) ideal of AA generated by aa and bb. Show that the symmetric algebra S(m)S(m) is not an integral domain. (Observe that mm is identified with the quotient module A2/NA^2/N, where NN is the submodule of A2A^2 generated by (b,−a)(b, -a); conclude that S(m)S(m) is isomorphic to the quotient ring A[U,V]/(bU−aV)A[U, V]/(bU - aV) and show that in the polynomial ring A[U,V]A[U, V] the principal ideal (bV−aU)(bV - aU) is not prime, by considering the product b2(bV3−U3)b^2(bV^3 - U^3).)
