Exercise 5, § 1

Algebra, V, p. 146

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let P\mathfrak{P} be the set of prime numbers and put A=∏p∈PFpA = \prod_{p \in \mathfrak{P}} F_p. For every filter F\mathscr{F} on P\mathfrak{P} (Gm. Top., I, p. 57) denote by mF⊂Am_{\mathscr{F}} \subset A the set of u=(up)p∈Pu = (u_p)_{p \in \mathfrak{P}} such that the set of p∈Pp \in \mathfrak{P} with up=0u_p = 0 is a member of F\mathscr{F}. Show that mFm_{\mathscr{F}} is an ideal and that we thus obtain a bijection between the ideals of AA distinct from AA and the filters on P\mathfrak{P}. Let F\mathscr{F} be an ultrafilter (Gen. Top., I, p. 60) on P\mathfrak{P} which does not possess a limit in the discrete topology. Show that A/mFA / m_{\mathscr{F}} is a field of characteristic 0, isomorphic to a subfield of C\mathbf{C}. \*
