Exercise 2, § 13

Algebra, V, p. 170

a) Let EE be an extension of a field KK of characteristic p>0p > 0 and FF an extension of EE. Show that if BB is a pp-basis of EE over K(Ep)K(E^p) and CC a pp-basis of FF over E(Fp)E(F^p), then there exists a pp-basis of FF over K(Fp)K(F^p) contained in B∪CB \cup C.

b) Suppose that B is finite and that F is an algebraic extension of K of finite degree. Show that [E:K(Ep)]≥[F:K(Fp)][E : K(E^p)] \geq [F : K(F^p)]. If moreover F is separable over E, show that [E:K(Ep)]=[F:K(Fp)][E : K(E^p)] = [F : K(F^p)].
