Exercise 1, § 15

Algebra, V, p. 175

Let K be a field of characteristic p > 0, E an extension of K and B a p-basis of E over K(Ep)K(E^p) (V, p. 98). a) Assume that E⊂Kp−1E \subset K^{p^{-1}}; let K0K_0 be a subfield of K such that E is separable over K0K_0. Show that the set BpB^p is a p-independent subset over K0(Kp)K_0(K^p) (observe that if (aλ)(a_\lambda) is a basis of the vector K0K_0-space KK, then (aλp)(a_\lambda^p) is a basis of K0(Kp)K_0(K^p) over K0K_0. Let CC be a subset of KK, disjoint from BpB^p and such that Bp∪CB^p \cup C is a p-basis of KK over K0(Kp)K_0(K^p); show that B∪CB \cup C is a p-basis of EE over K0(Ep)K_0(E^p).

b) Assume that E⊂Kp−nE \subset K^{p^{-n}} and that EE is separable over a subfield K0K_0 of KK. Show that if the degree of imperfection of KK over KnK_n is finite (V, p. 170. Ex. 1), then it is equal to the degree of imperfection of EE over K0K_0 (use a)).
