Exercise 7, § 16
Algebra, V, p. 179
Assume that the hypotheses of Ex. 6 hold, and further that the degree of imperfection of over (V, p. 170, Ex. 1) is finite (which is always the case if is a finitely generated extension of ).
a) Let be a p-basis of over which is also a separating transcendence basis of over (and a transcendence basis of over ). Show that for every integer , is a p-independent subset of over . Let ; if is the degree of imperfection of over , show that , where , is equal to the degree and is therefore independent of the choice of the distinguished subextension of . The integer is called the order of inseparability of over and is written ; this number coincides with the inseparable degree denoted by , in V, p. 46 when is of finite degree.
b) For , is equal to , where .
c) Let be a subextension of , separable over and such that is p-radical and of finite degree over ; show that , (if , show that , by considering a basis of over and a basis of over ).
d) Let be an extension of such that and are contained in the same algebraically closed extension of . Show that if is separable over , it is a distinguished subextension of the extension of . This is so when and are algebraically disjoint over and then we have ,; equality holds when and are linearly disjoint over or when is a separable algebraic extension of .
e) Show that is the least value of for all transcendence bases of over ; if is the relative algebraic closure of in (which is an algebraic closure of ), then . If is a subextension of such that is an algebraic extension of and a separable (algebraic) extension of , then the largest separable extension of contained in is distinguished.
f) Suppose that is a finitely generated extension of ; show that for every subextension of we have . Give an example where
