Let KK be a field and pp its characteristic exponent. For every integer n>0n > 0 and prime to pp, denote by φK(n)\varphi_K(n) the degree over KK of Rn(K)=K(μn)R_n(K) = K(\mu_n), where μn\mu_n denotes the group of n-th roots of unity in an algebraic closure of KK. For example φQ(n)=φ(n)\varphi_Q(n) = \varphi(n) (V, p. 84, Th. 2); if KK is finite with qq elements, φK(n)\varphi_K(n) is the order of the residue class of qq in (Z/nZ)∗(\mathbf{Z}/n\mathbf{Z})^* (V, p. 97, Cor.) ; if KK is algebraically closed, φK(n)=1\varphi_K(n) = 1 for all nn. a) Let EE be the relative algebraic closure of the prime field KpK_p in KK. Show that φK(n)=φFp(n)\varphi_K(n) = \varphi_{F_p}(n). b) Suppose that KK is a finitely generated extension of KpK_p. Let mm be an integer >0> 0; then there exists an integer N>0N > 0 divisible by every nn such that φK(n)≤m\varphi_K(n) \leq m. c) Let ss be an element of GLm(K)GL_m(K) of finite order. Show that sNs^N has order a power of pp. (We have s=tu=uts = tu = ut, where uu has order a power of pp and tt has order nn prime to pp. The element tt is root of a separable polynomial Xn−1X^n - 1 as well as of its characteristic polynomial; deduce that the subalgebra AA of Mm(K)M_m(K) generated by tt is etale, of degree ≤m\leq m, isomorphic to a product of extensions Rd(K)R_d(K), where dd runs over certain divisors of nn including nn itself. Therefore φK(n)≤m\varphi_K(n) \leq m; use b.).
