Let E be an extension of a field K, x∈Ex \in E a transcendental element over K, so that K(x)K(x) is isomorphic to the field K(T)K(T) of rational fractions in an indeterminate over K. Thus every y∈K(x)y \in K(x) may be written y=g(x)/h(x)y = g(x)/h(x), where g and h are two polynomials of K[X]K[X] that are relatively prime (IV, p. 12), determined up to a non-zero common factor in K; the larger of the degrees of g and h is called the height of y with respect to x. a) Show that in the polynomial ring K(y)[X]K(y)[X] the polynomial g(X)−yh(X)g(X) - yh(X) is irreducible if y∉Ky \notin K. Deduce that if y has height n>0n > 0 with respect to x, then K(x)K(x) is an algebraic extension of degree nn of K(y)K(y).

Let P(X)=∑i=0nyiXiP(X) = \sum_{i=0}^{n} y_i X^i be the minimal polynomial of xx over K(y)K(y). Show that for 0≤i≤n0 \leq i \leq n we have either yi∈Ky_i \in K or K(yi)=K(y)K(y_i) = K(y).

b) Deduce from a) that every y∈K(x)y \in K(x) such that K(y)=K(x)K(y) = K(x) is of the form (ax+b)/(cx+d)(ax + b)/(cx + d) where a,b,c,da, b, c, d are elements of KK such that ad−bc≠0ad - bc \neq 0; converse. Find all KK-automorphisms of K(x)K(x).

c) Show that if y∈K(x)y \in K(x) is of height nn with respect to xx, and z∈K(y)z \in K(y) of height mm with respect to yy, then zz is of height mnmn with respect to xx.

\* d) Let FF be an extension of KK such that K⊂F⊂K(x)K \subset F \subset K(x) and F≠KF \neq K; let yy be an element of FF whose height mm with respect to xx has the least possible value; show that F=K(y)F = K(y) ("Liuroth's theorem"). (Let PP be the minimal polynomial of xx in F[T]F[T]; show that P(T)=Q(T,x)/R(x)P(T) = Q(T, x)/R(x), where QQ is a polynomial of K[T,X]K[T, X] of degree ≥m\geq m in XX and is not divisible by any non-constant polynomial of K[X]K[X], and RR is a polynomial of K[X]K[X]. If y=g(x)/h(x)y = g(x)/h(x), where gg and hh are relatively prime in K[X]K[X], observe that by a) the polynomial g(T)h(X)−g(X)h(T)g(T)h(X) - g(X)h(T) is not divisible by any non-constant polynomial of K[T]K[T] or of K[X]K[X]; deduce that necessarily

g(T)h(X)−g(X)h(T)=c⋅Q(T,X), g(T)h(X) - g(X)h(T) = c \cdot Q(T, X),

where c∈Kc \in K,
