Algebra, V, p. 149

It is set in small type as supplementary.

a) With the notation and hypotheses as in Ex. 11, show that for an extension FF of KK such that K⊂F⊂K(x)K \subset F \subset K(x) to be such that F∩K[x]≠KF \cap K[x] \neq K, it is necessary and sufficient that F=K(y)F = K(y) where y=g(x)y = g(x) for a non-constant polynomial g∈K[T]g \in K[T]; then we have K(y)∩K[x]=K[y]K(y) \cap K[x] = K[y]. (Write F=K(y)F = K(y) with y=g(x)/h(x)y = g(x)/h(x), gg and hh being relatively prime polynomials of K[T]K[T]. If there exists a non-constant polynomial P∈K[T]P \in K[T] such that P(x)∈FP(x) \in F, we can write P(x)=Q(y)/R(y)P(x) = Q(y)/R(y), where QQ and RR are two relatively prime monic polynomials of K[T]K[T], not both constant. Distinguish two cases, according as R=1R = 1 or RR is non-constant; in the second case, decompose QQ and RR into factors of the first degree in an algebraic closure Ω\Omega of KK and observe that if a,ba, b are distinct elements of Ω\Omega, then g−ahg - ah and g−bhg - bh are relatively prime in Ω[T]\Omega[T].)

b) If F=K(y)F = K(y) with y=g(x)y = g(x), where g∈K[T]g \in K[T] is non-constant, we may suppose that g(T)=Tg1(T)g(T) = Tg_1(T), where g1∈K[T]g_1 \in K[T]. Show that if K(xg(x))∩K[y]≠KK(xg(x)) \cap K[y] \neq K, we necessarily have g1(T)=aTng_1(T) = aT^n with a∈Ka \in K and n>0n > 0. (Observe that by hypothesis and a) there exist two non-constant polynomials P,QP, Q in K[T]K[T] such that P(xg(x))=Q(g(x))∉KP(xg(x)) = Q(g(x)) \notin K; deduce that there are two elements a,ba, b in KK and an integer mm such that g(T)g(T) divides a−bTma - bT^m.)

c) Let y,zy, z be two elements of K[x]K[x] such that K(y)∩K(z)≠KK(y) \cap K(z) \neq K; show that then K[y]∩K[z]≠KK[y] \cap K[z] \neq K.

d) Find y∈K(x)y \in K(x) such that K(y)=K(x)K(y) = K(x) but K[y]∩K[x]=KK[y] \cap K[x] = K.
