Algebra, V, p. 151

Let KK be a field and AA a commutative KK-algebra. For AA to be etale it is necessary and sufficient that there should exist a finite subset SS of AA generating the KK-algebra AA and such that for all x∈Sx \in S the subalgebra K[x]K[x] generated by xx is etale. (If SS generates AA, the KK-algebra AA is isomorphic to a quotient of the tensor product of the K[x]K[x], where xx runs over SS.)
