Let Γ\Gamma be a finite commutative monoid. Consider the following conditions E0E_0 and EpE_p where pp denotes a prime number. (E0)(E_0) If x∈Γx \in \Gamma and if e,de, d are integers ≥0\geq 0, the relation xe+d=xdx^{e+d} = x^d implies the relation xe+1=xx^{e+1} = x. (Ep)(E_p) If x,y∈Γx, y \in \Gamma, the relation xp=ypx^p = y^p implies x=yx = y. Let KK be a field of characteristic pp (≥0\geq 0) and let AA be the KK-algebra K(Γ)K^{(\Gamma)} of the monoid Γ\Gamma. a) For AA to be etale it is necessary and sufficient that the condition (Ep)(E_p) be satisfied. (Use Ex. 1 for the sufficiency. For the necessity observe for p=0p = 0 that xe+1−xx^{e+1} - x is nilpotent if xe+d=xdx^{e+d} = x^d; for p>0p > 0 use the Cor. of V, p. 35.) b) Let XX be the set of homomorphisms of Γ\Gamma into the multiplicative monoid of KK. We have Card X≤Card Γ\mathrm{Card}\ X \leq \mathrm{Card}\ \Gamma. If KK is algebraically closed, then Card X=Card Γ\mathrm{Card}\ X = \mathrm{Card}\ \Gamma holds if and only if condition (Ep)(E_p) is satisfied. c) If Γ\Gamma is a group, condition (E0)(E_0) always holds ; if p>0p > 0, condition (Ep)(E_p) is equivalent to saying that each element of Γ\Gamma has order prime to pp, or also that Card Γ\mathrm{Card}\ \Gamma is not divisible by pp.
