Let K be a field of characteristic 0, a, β, 5 three elements of an algebraic closure of K such that [K(α):K]=2, [K(β):K]=3, [K(ξ):K]=n>1[K(\alpha):K] = 2,\ [K(\beta):K] = 3,\ [K(\xi):K] = n > 1; denote by a' (resp. β′,β′′\beta', \beta'') the unique conjugate ≠a\neq a of a (resp. the conjugates ≠β\neq \beta of β). a) Show that [K(α,ξ):K]=n[K(\alpha, \xi):K] = n if a∈K(ξ)a \in K(\xi), [K(α,5):K]=2n[K(\alpha, 5):K] = 2n otherwise. b) Show that [K(β,5):K]=n[K(\beta, 5):K] = n if β∈K(ξ)\beta \in K(\xi), [K(β,5):K]=2n[K(\beta, 5):K] = 2n if β∈K(ξ)\beta \in K(\xi) and just one of β′,β′′\beta', \beta'' belongs to K(ξ)K(\xi) and finally [K(β,ξ):K]=3n[K(\beta, \xi):K] = 3n if none of the three elements β,β′,β′′\beta, \beta', \beta'' belongs to K(ξ)K(\xi). c) If d is the discriminant of the minimal polynomial of β, show that K(β,β′)=K(β,d)K(\beta, \beta') = K(\beta, \sqrt{d}). d) Show that K(β,β′)=K(β−β′)K(\beta, \beta') = K(\beta - \beta'). e) If n=2n = 2 and a∉K(ξ)a \notin K(\xi), show that K(α,ξ)=K(α+ξ)K(\alpha, \xi) = K(\alpha + \xi). f) Show that K(α,β)=K(a+β)K(\alpha, \beta) = K(a + \beta). g) Show that K(α,β)=K(αβ)K(\alpha, \beta) = K(\alpha \beta) except when a=aja = aj and β3=b\beta^3 = b, where a, b are elements of K and j3=1j^3 = 1.
