Exercise 12, § 2

Algebra, VI, p. 40

Let KK be a maximal ordered field, let ff be a polynomial over KK and let aa and bb be two roots of FF such that a<ba < b and such that FF has no roots between aa and bb. Show that if gg is a rational function over KK whose denominator does not vanish for a≤x≤ba \leq x \leq b then the equation f(x)g(x)+f′(x)=0f(x)g(x) + f'(x) = 0 has an odd number of solutions in (a,b)(a, b) (where each solution is counted with its multiplicity; use Prop. 5 of VI, p. 25). Deduce that if hh is a rational function over KK having aa and bb as roots and whose denominator does not vanish in ]a,b[]a, b[, then the equation h′(x)=0h'(x) = 0 has at least one root in ]a,b[]a, b[.
