Exercise 13, § 2

Algebra, VI, p. 40

Let KK be a maximal ordered field, let hh be a rational function over KK and let [a,b][a, b] be a closed interval in which hh is defined. Show that there exists c∈]a,b[c \in ]a, b[ such that h(b)−h(a)=(b−a)h′(c)h(b) - h(a) = (b - a)h'(c) (use Ex. 12). Deduce that hh is an increasing function in [a,b][a, b] if and only if h′(x)≥0h'(x) \geq 0 in this interval (to see that this condition is necessary, split the interval by the roots of h′(x)=0h'(x) = 0).
