Exercise 21, § 2
Algebra, VI, p. 42
Let be a finite sequence of elements of an ordered field K, not all zero; let be the subsequence of consisting of the nonzero (); then the number of indices such that and have opposite signs is called the number of variations of the sequence . Let K be a maximal ordered field and let be a nonzero polynomial in of degree ; for all let denote the number of variations of the sequence . If is the number of roots of , counted with multiplicity, in the interval ] (a < b), show that and that is even (« Budan-Fourier rule »; split the interval ] by the roots of , and evaluate the amount of variation in as passes one of these roots). Deduce that if , then the number of roots of , counted with multiplicity, is at most equal to the number of variations of the sequence , and that the difference between these two numbers is even (« Descartes' rule »).
