Exercise 23, § 2

Algebra, VI, p. 43

Let K be a maximal ordered field and let a1,…,an,b1,…,bna_1, \ldots, a_n, b_1, \ldots, b_n be 2n elements of K such that ∑ai≠0\sum a_i \neq 0 and b1<b2<…<bnb_1 < b_2 < \ldots < b_n. Show that for any integer m≥1m \geq 1 the number vv of roots in K, counted with multiplicity, of the polynomial

f(T)=a1(T−b1)m+a2(T−b2)m+…+an(T−bn)m f(T) = a_1 (T - b_1)^m + a_2 (T - b_2)^m + \ldots + a_n (T - b_n)^m

is at most equal to the number of variations w of the sequence

(a1,a2,…,an;(−1)mai), (a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_n; (-1)^m a_i),

and that the difference w−vw - v is even. (Argue by induction on nn, applying Ex. 13 (VI, p. 40) to a rational function of the form f(T)/(T−c)mf(T)/(T - c)^m.)
