Exercise 9, § 2

Algebra, VII, p. 56

a) Let MM be a nn-primary module, and let M1M_1 be the submodule of MM consisting of elements of infinite height in MM. Show that the nn-primary module M/M1M/M_1 contains no nonzero element of infinite height.

b) Let pp be a prime number, and let EE be the direct sum of the pp-groups En=Z/(pn)E_n = \mathbf{Z}/(p^n) (n≥1n \geq 1); let ene_n denote the residue class of 1 mod pnp^n in EnE_n. Let HH be the submodule of EE generated by the elements e1−pn−1ene_1 - p^{n-1} e_n for all integers n≥2n \geq 2. Let MM be the quotient module E/HE/H. Show that the submodule M1M_1 of elements of infinite height in MM is the submodule (E,+H)/H(E, + H)/H, which is isomorphic to E1E_1, and show that there is no nonzero element in M1M_1, which has infinite height in MM.
