Algebra, VIII, p. 428

Let C be a conjugacy class of G and π\pi an irreducible representation of G of degree dd.

a) Prove that the element d−1d^{-1} Card(C) χ(C)\chi (C) of K is integral over Z\mathbf{Z} (reason as in the proof of Proposition 9 of VIII, p. 415).

b) Suppose that dd and Card(C) are mutually prime integers. Prove that the element d−1χ(C)d^{-1}\chi (C) is integral over Z\mathbf{Z}.

∗*c) Suppose, moreover, K=CK =\mathbf{C}. Prove that all conjugates of d−1χ(C)d^{-1}\chi (C) over Q\mathbf{Q} have absolute value ⩽1\leqslant 1. Deduce from Exercise 16, c) that ∣χ(C)∣|\chi (C)| is zero or equal to dd. Conclude that if χ(C)\chi (C) is not zero, then π(x)\pi (x) is a homothety for every x∈Cx\in C. In particular, if π\pi is faithful and C is not reduced to one element, then we have χ(C)=0.∗\chi (C) = 0.*
