Algebra, VIII, p. 415, § 21. Linear Representations of Finite Groups

Suppose that the field K has characteristic zero. Then the degree of every simple representation of G divides the cardinal of G.

Let (V,π)(V, \pi ) be a simple representation of G and χ\chi be its character. For every element aa of Z(K[G]), the endomorphism π(a)\pi (a) of V is a homothety (VIII, p. 47, Theorem 1); denote by φ(a)\varphi (a) the scalar such that π(a)=φ(a)V\pi (a) =\varphi (a)_V. The resulting mapping φ\varphi from Z(K[G]) to K is an algebra homomorphism. Let us take a=∑g∈Gχ(g−1)ga=\sum_{g\in G}\chi (g^{-1})g; by the remark of VIII, p. 408, we have φ(a)=\varphi (a) = (dim VV)−1∣G∣^{-1}|G|. On the other hand, aa belongs to the subring On[G]∩Z(K[G])\mathscr{O}_n[G]\cap Z(K[G]) of K[G], which is a finitely generated Z\mathbf{Z}-module (VII, §3, p. 15, Corollary). So the element φ(a)=\varphi (a) = (dim VV)−1∣G∣^{-1}|G| of K belongs to a subring of K that is a finitely generated Z\mathbf{Z}-module. We conclude using the following lemma.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
