Algebra, VIII, p. 433
Let F be an algebraically closed field of characteristic and G be a finite group.
a) Let . Prove that there exists a unique decomposition , where the order of is a power of , that of is prime to , and and commute. The elements and are powers of .
b) Let be a linear representation of G over F of finite degree. Prove that we have for every .
c) We say that an element of G is -regular if its order is prime to ; we denote by the set of -regular elements of G and by the space of central functions from to F. From the homomorphism that sends the class of a representation to the restriction of to , we deduce a ring homomorphism . Prove that is injective (use b) and the corollary of VIII, p. 384).
d) Let be a -regular element of its commutant, P a Sylow -subgroup of , and the subgroup of G generated by P and . Prove that is the direct product of P and the subgroup of G generated by and that its conjugacy class is well determined by the conjugacy class of .
e) Construct representations of of degree 1 and elements of F such that the function takes value 1 at and 0 at the other powers of (first construct representations of the subgroup generated by ). Let Ind for , and let . Prove that is equal to , which is nonzero in F, and that is zero for every -regular element of G that is not conjugate to .
f ) Deduce from e) that the homomorphism is bijective. In particular, the number of isomorphism classes of simple F[G]-modules is equal to the number of conjugacy classes of -regular elements of G.
