Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
(a) Show that if and if has no predecessor, then is an indecomposable ordinal (cf. § 2, Exercise 16 (a)); if is finite and if , then ; if is infinite and if is the greatest indecomposable ordinal , then (use Exercise 11).
(b) An ordinal is critical with respect to the functional symbol if and only if, for each such that , the equation has a solution; the unique solution of this equation is then indecomposable (use Exercise 13 (e), together with Exercise 18 (d) of § 2). Conversely, for each and each indecomposable ordinal , is a critical ordinal with respect to (use Exercise 13 (c)). Deduce that is a critical ordinal with respect to if and only if is of the form (cf. Exercise 11 (b)).
(c) For an ordinal to be critical with respect to the functional symbol , i.e., such that for each satisfying , it is sufficient that . Show that the least critical ordinal with respect to is countable (cf. Exercise 13 (d)).
