Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let γ\gamma be an ordinal >1> 1, and for each ordinal α\alpha let L(α)L(\alpha) denote the set of exponents λi\lambda_i in the expression for α\alpha given in Exercise 12 (a).

(a) Show that λi⩽α\lambda_i \leqslant \alpha for each λi∈L(α)\lambda_i \in L(\alpha), and that λi=α\lambda_i = \alpha for one of these ordinals only if α=0\alpha = 0 or if α\alpha is a critical ordinal with respect to ξη\xi^\eta (Exercise 14 (c)).

(b) Define Ln(α)L_n(\alpha) by induction on nn as follows : L1(α)=L(α)L_1(\alpha) = L(\alpha), and Ln(α)L_n(\alpha) is the union of the sets L(β)L(\beta) as β\beta runs through Ln−1(α)L_{n-1}(\alpha). Show that there exists an integer n0n_0 such that Ln+1(α)=Ln(α)L_{n+1}(\alpha) = L_n(\alpha) whenever n⩾n0n \geqslant n_0, and that the elements of Ln(α)L_n(\alpha) are then either 0 or critical ordinals with respect to ξη\xi^\eta. (Argue by contradiction: for each nn, consider the set Mn(α)M_n(\alpha) of elements β∈Ln(α)\beta \in L_n(\alpha) such that β∉L(β)\beta \notin L(\beta), and assume that Mn(α)M_n(\alpha) is not empty for any nn; use (a) to obtain a contradiction.)
