Theory of Sets, III, 245

A cardinal ℵα\aleph_\alpha is said to be regular (resp. singular) if the initial ordinal ωα\omega_\alpha is regular (resp. singular). For ℵα\aleph_\alpha to be regular it is necessary and sufficient that for every family (aι)ι∈I(\mathfrak{a}_\iota)_{\iota \in I} of cardinals such that Card (I) <ℵα< \aleph_\alpha and aι<ℵα\mathfrak{a}_\iota < \aleph_\alpha for all ι∈I\iota \in I, we have

∑ι∈Iaι<ℵα.\sum_{\iota \in I} \mathfrak{a}_\iota < \aleph_\alpha.

ℵω\aleph_\omega is the least singular cardinal.
