Exercise 3, § 4

Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 74

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let II be the compact interval [0,1][0, 1] of R\mathbf{R} and FF be the vector space C(I,R)\mathscr{C}(I, \mathbf{R}) of continuous real valued functions defined in II. Let EE be the product space RF\mathbf{R}^F; for all a∈Ia \in I, let εa\varepsilon_a be the element of EE such that εa(f)=f(a)\varepsilon_a(f) = f(a) for all f∈Ff \in F. a) Show that, when xx varies in II, the set KK formed by the εx\varepsilon_x is compact in EE. b) Let λ\lambda be an element of EE such that λ(f)=∫01f(t) dt\lambda(f) = \int_0^1 f(t)\ dt for all f∈Ff \in F (Lebesgue measure). Show that, in EE, λ\lambda belongs to the closure of the convex envelope of KK but does not belong to this convex envelope (cf. FVR, II, p. 7, prop. 5).
