Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 74

a) Let EE be an infinite dimensional normed space and T\mathscr{T} be its topology. Show that there exists on EE a normed space topology T′\mathscr{T}' that is strictly finer than that of T\mathscr{T} and a normed space topology T′′\mathscr{T}'' that is strictly coarser than that of T\mathscr{T} (define the neighbourhoods of 0 for these topologies, using a basis of EE put in the form (aα,n)(a_{\alpha,n}) where α\alpha varies in an infinite set of indices AA and nn in the set of integers ≥0\geq 0 and where ∥aα,n∥=1\|a_{\alpha,n}\| = 1 for the given norm on EE. b) Let pp be the norm defining the topology T′\mathscr{T}'. Show that, if EE is complete for the topology T\mathscr{T}, then pp cannot be lower semi-continuous in EE for the topology T\mathscr{T} (use Baire's th. cf. III, p. 25, corollary). Deduce that the convex set AA defined by the relation p(x)<1p(x) < 1 does not contain any interior point for T\mathscr{T} even though all its points are internal. c) Deduce from b), that, if EE is complete for the topology T\mathscr{T}, then there exists in EE convex sets which are not closed for T\mathscr{T}, of which the intersection with every linear variety of finite dimension is closed for T\mathscr{T} (cf. II, p. 67, exerc. 12).
