Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 85
Let be a vector space. We say that a Hausdorff locally convex topology on is minimal (and that , with , is a space of minimal type) if there exists no Hausdorff locally convex topology on , that is strictly coarser than (cf. II, p. 81, exerc. 1). *a) Let be a minimal topology on , and let be the dual of (when has the topology ); show that and (note that there cannot be an everywhere dense hyperplane in for the topology using the cor. 3 of II, p. 43). Deduce that spaces of minimal type are products of lines. *b) Show that in a Hausdorff locally convex space , every subspace of minimal type has a topological complement, and in particular is closed (use a) and the Hahn-Banach th. for extending the identity mapping of in itself to a mapping of in . *c) Let be a continuous linear mapping of a space of minimal type in a Hausdorff locally convex space . Show that is closed in and that is a strict morphism of in (use b) and the definition of a space of minimal type). *d) Let be a Hausdorff locally convex space and be a closed vector subspace of . Show that, if there exists a complement of in that is a subspace of minimal type, then is a topological complement of in (use c). *e) Let be a subspace of minimal type in a Hausdorff locally convex space ; show that, for every closed vector subspace of the sum is closed in (consider the quotient space and use c)). If further is of minimal type, then is of minimal type.
