Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 85

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let E,FE, F be two Hausdorff locally convex space. We say that a continuous linear mapping u:E→Fu : E \to F is linearly proper if, for every Hausdorff locally convex space GG and every closed vector subspace VV of E×GE \times G the image of VV by u×1G:E×G→F×Gu \times 1_G : E \times G \to F \times G is closed. Show that this condition is equivalent to the following : u−1(0)u^{-1}(0) is a subspace of minimal type of EE and for every closed vector subspace WW of EE, the set u(W)u(W) is closed in FF. (To show that the first condition implies the second, consider the mapping v:E→{0}v : E \to \{0\} and, giving EE the topology σ(E,E′)\sigma(E, E'), so that EE is immersed in E′∗{E'}^* with σ(E′∗,E′)\sigma({E'}^*, E'), take the image under the projection v×1E′∗:E×E′∗→E′∗v \times 1_{{E'}^*} : E \times {E'}^* \to {E'}^* of the closure in E×E′∗E \times {E'}^* of the diagonal Δ\Delta of E×EE \times E. To show that the second condition implies the first, show that it implies that, for the topologies σ(E,E′)\sigma(E, E') and σ(F,F′)\sigma(F, F'), the mapping uu is a strict morphism and use exerc. 13, e). \*
