Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 86

It is set in small type as supplementary.

a) In a normed space E, let A be a closed convex set ≠E\neq E; show that the function x↦d(x,∁A)x \mapsto d(x, \complement A) is concave in A (use the fact that A is the intersection of closed half-spaces). b) Define inductively a sequence of closed convex sets An⊂RnA_n \subset \mathbf{R}^n in the following manner; A1=R+A_1 = \mathbf{R}_+; if Rn+1\mathbf{R}^{n+1} is identified with Rn×R\mathbf{R}^n \times \mathbf{R}, then An+1A_{n+1} is the set of pairs (x,ξ)(x, \xi) such that x∈A∘nx \in \overset{\circ}{A}_n and that

ξ≥(d(x,∁An))−1+∥x∥2, \xi \geq (d(x, \complement A_n))^{-1} + \|x\|^2,
where ∥x∥\|x\| is the Euclidean norm. Show that An+1A_{n+1} does not have any support hyperplane of the form H×RH \times \mathbf{R}, where H is a hyperplane of Rn\mathbf{R}^n and that its asymptotic cone is {0}×R+\{0\} \times \mathbf{R}_+. c) If pnmp_{nm} is the canonical projection Rm→Rn\mathbf{R}^m \to \mathbf{R}^n (Rm\mathbf{R}^m being identified with Rn×Rm−n\mathbf{R}^n \times \mathbf{R}^{m-n}) for m≥nm \geq n, show that when RN\mathbf{R}^N is identified with the projective limit of the projective system (Rn,pnm)(\mathbf{R}^n, p_{nm}) the AnA_n form a projective system of sets and that A=lim⁡←AnA = \lim \leftarrow A_n is a closed convex set not relatively compact in RN\mathbf{R}^N, having no closed hyperplane of support and such that CA={0}C_A = \{0\}.
