Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 84
Let F and G be two vector spaces in separating duality and A be a convex subset of F which contains 0. For every , write
so that ; we call the support function of A. a) Show that is the gauge of (II, p. 20). b) If A is weakly compact, then, for all , the hyperplane with the equation is a support hyperplane of A. c) is finite and continuous for the topology if, and only if, A is finite-dimensional and bounded (in the finite dimensional vector subspace that it generates). d) Let () be convex sets in F which contain 0 and be real numbers (); show that the support function of the convex set is . If is such that the intersection , of with the hyperplane , is non-empty for , show that the intersection of A and the hyperplane with equation is the set . e) Suppose that A is locally compact and does not contain any line. Then the set which is the union of and the set of such that is the polar cone of the asymptotic cone (consider the case when A is the convex envelope of and of one half-line). f) Suppose that F is finite dimensional. Show that, A is parabolic (II, p. 67, exerc. 17) if and only if is a continuous mapping of G in (if there exists a line paralle to a half-line of , which does not meet A, note that there exists a hyperplane separating this half-line from A).
