Exercise 17, § 3

Topological Vector Spaces, IV, p. 61

It is set in small type as supplementary.

a) Let EE be a locally convex Hausdorff space, such that the bornology consisting of the relatively compact sets of EE has a countable base (An)(A_n) (III, p. 1). Show that (An)(A_n) is also a base for the canonical bornology (III, p. 3, def. 5). (Let CnC_n be the relatively compact set which is the sum of nn sets each equal to AnA_n; then (Cn)(C_n) is also a base for the bornology of relatively compact sets. Argue by reductio ad absurdum, considering a bounded set BB which is not contained in any of the CnC_n, and conclude that there exists a sequence (xn)(x_n) of points of BB such that xn/n∉Anx_n/n \notin A_n; deduce a contradiction.) Then, the space EE is semi-reflexive and the closed convex balanced envelope of every compact set in EE is compact. b) Suppose that EE is infrabarrelled and that for a topology T\mathscr{T} compatible with the duality between EE and E′E', there exists a countable base for the bornology of relatively compact subsets of EE for T\mathscr{T}. Show that then EE is a reflexive (DF) space (IV, p. 57, exerc. 2). (Use aa), observing that the closed bounded sets in EE are compact for T\mathscr{T}, and consequently, complete for the initial topology of EE; this implies that EE is barrelled). If T\mathscr{T} is the initial topology, then EE is a Montel space.
