Topological Vector Spaces, IV, p. 61

a) Let EE be a locally convex Hausdorff space, and let (An)(A_n) be an increasing sequence of convex, balanced, compact sets for the weakened topology σ(E,E′)\sigma(E, E'), such that the union of the sets AnA_n is EE, and that for every integer nn and every λ>0\lambda > 0, there exists mm such that λAn⊂Am\lambda A_n \subset A_m. Show that (An)(A_n) is a base for the bornology consisting of convex and relatively compact sets for σ(E,E′)\sigma(E, E'). (Observe that on E′E' the topology of uniform convergence on the AnA_n is τ(E′,E)\tau(E', E).) b) If EE is barrelled and if there exists a sequence (An)(A_n) having the properties mentioned in aa, then EE is a reflexive (DF) space. (Observe that E′E', endowed with τ(E′,E)\tau(E', E) is metrizable and that the topology of EE is β(E,E′)\beta(E, E').)
