Topological Vector Spaces, IV, p. 63

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let A be a countable set. Consider three pairs of vector spaces (P,P′),(Q,Q′),(E,E′)(P, P'), (Q, Q'), (E, E'), each of the six spaces being vector subspaces of RA\mathbf{R}^A and containing the direct sum subspace R(A)\mathbf{R}^{(A)}; in addition, suppose that for every point x∈Px \in P (resp. x∈Qx \in Q, x∈Ex \in E) and every point x′∈P′x' \in P' (resp. x′∈Q′x' \in Q', x′∈E′x' \in E'), the family (xαxα′)α∈A(x_\alpha x'_\alpha)_{\alpha \in A} is summable and put ⟨x,x′⟩=∑α∈Axαxα′\langle x, x' \rangle = \sum_{\alpha \in A} x_\alpha x'_\alpha; this bilinear form puts P and P′P' (resp. Q and Q′Q', E and E′E') in separating duality.

a) Suppose that E=P∩QE = P \cap Q, E′⊃P′+Q′E' \supset P' + Q' and E′≠P′+Q′E' \neq P' + Q'. Consider the linear mapping u:x↦(x,x)u : x \mapsto (x, x) from E into F=P×QF = P \times Q, which is put into separating duality with F′=P′×Q′F' = P' \times Q'. Show that uu is continuous for the weak topologies σ(E,E′)\sigma(E, E') and σ(F,F′)\sigma(F, F') and that its image M=u(E)M = u(E) is a closed subspace for σ(F,F′)\sigma(F, F'); deduce that u′u' is a strict morphism from F′F' into E′E' for the topologies σ(F′,F)\sigma(F', F) and σ(E′,E)\sigma(E', E), and that N=u′(F)N = u'(F) is not closed in E′E' for σ(E′,E)\sigma(E', E). If E′E' is metrizable for the topology τ(E′,E)\tau(E', E), deduce that u′u' is also a strict morphism from F′F' into E′E' for the topologies τ(F′,F)\tau(F', F) and τ(E′,E)\tau(E', E).

b) In addition, suppose that E′E' is a Fréchet space for τ(E′,E)\tau(E', E). Then F′/M∘F'/M^\circ endowed with the quotient topology of τ(F′,F)\tau(F', F) by M∘M^\circ, is not semi-complete, and there exist bounded sets in F′/M∘F'/M^\circ which are not relatively compact for τ(F′/M∘,M)\tau(F'/M^\circ, M).

c) Under the same hypotheses as in b), let x′x' be an element of E′E' not belonging to N=u′(F′)N = u'(F'); for every y∈My \in M, let v(y)=⟨x,x′⟩v(y) = \langle x, x' \rangle, where x∈Ex \in E is the unique element such that u(x)=yu(x) = y. Show that the linear form vv on MM is not continuous for the topology σ(F,F′)\sigma(F, F'), but that its restriction to every bounded subset of MM is continuous for σ(M,F′/M∘)\sigma(M, F'/M^\circ). Deduce that L=v−1(0)L = v^{-1}(0) is a vector subspace of FF, whose intersection with every bounded and closed subset of FF (for σ(F,F′)\sigma(F, F')) is closed for σ(F,F′)\sigma(F, F'), but which is not closed in FF for σ(F,F′)\sigma(F, F').
