Topological Vector Spaces, V, p. 70

a) Let E1,E2E_1, E_2 be two hilbertian spaces whose respective hilbertian dimensions are two cardinals mm and nn such that m<n≤mN0m < n \leq m^{N_0}. Let E=E1⊕E2E = E_1 \oplus E_2 be the hilbertian sum of E1,E2E_1, E_2 and let (bλ)λ∈L(b_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} be an orthonormal basis of E2E_2. Show that there exists an algebraically independent system (aλ)λ∈L(a_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} in E1E_1 (cf. exerc. 1, c)); let HH be the subspace of EE generated (algebraically) by the family (aλ+bλ)λ∈L(a_\lambda + b_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L}. Show that the hilbertian dimension of H‾\overline{H} is equal to HH (observe that the orthogonal projection from HH onto E2E_2 is everywhere dense, and use exerc. 1, a)). If SS is an orthonormal subset of HH, show that S∩E2=∅S \cap E_2 = \varnothing; and deduce that Card(S)≤m\mathrm{Card}(S) \leq m (observe that every element of an orthonormal basis of E1E_1 is orthogonal to every element of SS except at most to a countably infinite subset). b) Let E3E_3 be a hilbertian space with hilbertian dimension p≥np \geq n, and let FF be the hilbertian sum E⊕E3E \oplus E_3. Let GG be the subspace H+E3H + E_3 of FF. Show that the hilbertian dimension of G‾\overline{G} is pp. If TT is an orthonormal subset of GG, show that T∩(E2+E3)⊂E3T \cap (E_2 + E_3) \subset E_3; deduce that the cardinality of the orthogonal projection from TT onto E2E_2 is at most mm (argue as in a)). Conclude from this that GG does not have an orthonormal basis, by observing that the orthogonal projection from GG onto E2E_2 is everywhere dense in E2E_2.
