Topological Vector Spaces, V, p. 71

Given nn points xi(1≤i≤n)x_i (1 \leq i \leq n) in a Hausdorff prehilbertian space E, we mean by the Gram’s determinant of these nn points the determinant

G(x1,...,xn)=det⁡(⟨xi∣xj⟩) G(x_1, ..., x_n) = \det(\langle x_i | x_j \rangle)

a) Show that G(x1,...,xn)≥0G(x_1, ..., x_n) \geq 0 and that for x1,...,xnx_1, ..., x_n to form an independent system, it is necessary and sufficient that G(x1,...,xn)≠0G(x_1, ..., x_n) \neq 0 (assuming that dim⁡(E)≥n\dim(E) \geq n, consider an orthonormal basis of an nn-dimensional subspace containing x1,...,xnx_1, ..., x_n). b) Show that if x1,...,xnx_1, ..., x_n is an independent system in E, the distance from a point x∈Ex \in E to the vector subspace V generated by x1,...,xnx_1, ..., x_n is equal to (G(x,x1,...,xn)/G(x1,...,xn))1/2(G(x, x_1, ..., x_n)/G(x_1, ..., x_n))^{1/2} (find the expression for the orthogonal projection of xx on V). c) Let (xn)(x_n) be an infinite sequence of points in E. For the family (xn)(x_n) to be topologically independent, it is necessary and sufficient that, for every integer p>0p > 0,

sup⁡n(G(x1,...,xp−1,xp+1,...,xn)/G(x1,...,xn))<+∞ \sup_n (G(x_1, ..., x_{p-1}, x_{p+1}, ..., x_n)/G(x_1, ..., x_n)) < + \infty
