Exercise 6, § 1

Functions of a Real Variable, I, 36

Let (rn)(r_n) be the sequence formed by the rational numbers in [0,1][0, 1], arranged in a certain order. Show that the function f(x)=∑n=0∞2−n(x−rn)1/3f(x) = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} 2^{-n}(x - r_n)^{1/3} is continuous and differentiable at every point of R\mathbf{R}, and has an infinite derivative at every point rnr_n. (To see that ff is differentiable at a point xx distinct from the rnr_n, distinguish two cases, according to whether the series with general term 2−n(x−rn)−2/32^{-n}(x - r_n)^{-2/3} has sum +∞+\infty or converges; in the second case, note for all x≠0x \neq 0 and all y≠xy \neq x, one has

0≤(y1/3−x1/3)/(y−x)≤4/3x2/3. 0 \leq (y^{1/3} - x^{1/3})/(y - x) \leq 4/3x^{2/3}.
